Bodacious Belleville belle Lea DeLaria has made a career out of playing larger than life personalities on screens both big and small. She’s credited with being the first openly gay comic to appear on America’s boob tube with her 1993 appearances on The Arsenio Hall Show and Comedy Central’s Out There. In 1994, the luscious lesbian made her acting debut via guest spots on Matlock and The John Larroquette Show. Next, the amusing ingénue made the move to movies with a small but mamorable part in The First Wives Club (1996). Throughout her distinguished career, the busy babe has done just about everything from a recurring role on the soap opera One Life to Live (1999, 2008) to voice-over work on the adult animated series The Oblongs (2001) — with a little bit of everything else in between. Indeed, the multi-talented mama is also a successful jazz singer. Yet we prefer seeing Lea do her thing on stage (The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told, Mamma Mia!), on film (Support the Girls), and on TV (Friends, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit). In 2013, Ms. DeLaria danced topless in the comedy Ass Backwards. But as racktastic as that was, she’s best known for playing Carrie “Big Boo” Black on the women-in-prison hit Orange Is the New Black (2013-2019).
